I'm 54 and I don't remember the arm extended like that but there could be reasons. This photo could be before or after me or maybe it's because I am from the south and we didn't do that. I recall that we did put our hand across our heart. What does the arm extention mean?

That is amazing! Is this really the way they did it then? It sure makes ya think...All I can say is Wow!
