yes you should give him time but what right did he have to yell at you? if your mother was worried then I could see him reacting but if he does this all the time then I would talk to your mother.
little tip: SOME Chihuahuas are just like that my aunt has three and two of them are timid shakey and they pee themselves when shes not around to hold them. I think you'd get more luck from a cat.
