How to Use Knife and Fork

Eating out can be intimidating for some of us because we can never be sure How to use a knife and fork, or what hand they go into. This howto will help explain how to properly use a knife and fork.

Step 1

You should be sure to use the forks, starting on the outside and work your way in for each course.
It is important to hold the utensils horizontally as it is not a weapon so you don’t need to make a fist.

Step 2

The fork goes into you your left hand, while the knife goes into the right. As mentioned before you should hold the utensils gently. Hold them between the index and middle finger s of both hands, your forefingers balancing them and keeping them parallel to your table.

Step 3

Now pierce the piece of food that you want to cut with your fork, with the tines facing down. Place your left index finger ontop in order to prevent any slippage. Now you will be using the knife in a saw-like motion. Only cut bite sized pieces, one or two at a time.

Step 4

Now take the food and put it into your mouth, ensuring that your mouth is closed as you chew. That’s it! That’s all there is to using a knife and fork properly.
