Yep, college wasn't a time for craft beers and expensive imports. It was a time for Natural Light. We'd occasionally treat ourselves to Rolling Rock. And I agree, coming back out, they aren't so good. |

Yeah. In my college days, I experienced quite a few 'chunky style' beers myself. They taste better going down though. |

I'll try some of those, altough it may take a bit of time as I am a slow drinker.

Oooh, I likes me some Shiner Oktoberfest too. Good stuff. Their seasonal grolsch (a lager style) is also very good, although I'm not sure they still make it. I haven't seen it this year. |

Also, bimjob if you like bocks, Anchor makes an excellent bock. Pretty much anything Anchor makes is great, but I really love their bock and porter. |

Shiner Bock is very good. I like Shiner's Oktoberfest Ale, but I'm very partial to ales. Shiner's definitely got the best microbrewery in Texas, although St. Arnold has a Christmas ale that knocks my socks off. I introduced it to some of my German friends, who said it was better than most Christmas ales in this part of the country. Warsteiner is excellent beer. Paulaner also makes some very good seasonal beers, and since they are one of the beer tents at Oktoberfest, that's the time of year when Paulaner is at its best. I've gotten really attached to the Belgian Trappist beers, especially the Rochefort 10, the Westmalle Dubbel, and of course, Westvleteren. Leffe, while not Trappist, has very good dark ales too. |

Thanks for the toast! in Texas, the best beer for the money, IMHO, is Shiner (a bock style beer). You probably have that there too, but it's probably not a 'cheap' beer like it is here. I can get Shiner for just slightly more than the crappy stuff. Of course, not everyone likes bocks. But I'd also comparison shop for Warsteiner and Kirin Ichiban - two of my favorite 'regulars'. God I can drink several pints of warsteiner..and have! (kirin is maybe a little too heavy for that) For an authentic pilsner, I prefer Pilsen (czec republic), and my favorite bitter of all time (hard to find in the states) is Victoria Bitter - I have fly to Oz for that one, so it's a rare treat. ...and for a stout, Guiness is a trusty standby. As far as the watery crappy stuff goes, I prefer Miller light. Keystone is almost tolerable in small quantities. It gives me a headache in larger amounts, just like Bud. I'm not trying to be a snob, I'm just at an income level where I no longer have to put up with the crap beers. Believe me, if Pearl light was all I could afford, I'd drink it - *again*. |
