Frequently Asked Questions
If you don't see the answer to your question here, then you may contact us. However, keep in mind most of the questions that you might think of asking via our contact form are answered below. Why can't I login?
First, make sure you entered your email and password correctly. The caps lock key should be off, as passwords are case sensitive. Next, make sure your browser is set to accept cookies and can interpret javascript. The apple Iphone can login on FunAdvice, but the t-mobile sidekick generally has trouble. If you're using a mobile phone, we're sorry, as most mobile phones aren't compatible with our site today, but they will be sometime in 2009.
How do I unsubscribe?
Manage your contact settings, what email you get, and how often in your profile page: click here after you have logged in to edit your contact settings.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, visit the edit my profile page after you have logged in here and then click delete my profile. However, you will need to tell us why you bailed out, because you made us very sad by deleting yourself from the system. To prevent abuse, you'll need to have a valid email address on file to delete your account. Edit your email account info here.
Why was my question or account deleted?
If you violate the Terms of Service, we will delete your question, answer, or photo. If you are repeatedly rude, obnoxious, creepy, or lie about your age, income, marital status, or similar trying to impress other members of the site, you will be deleted. If you are under 13 years old and you register for our site, we will delete you.
Can I copy something from FunAdvice?
No, read the Terms of Use.
Where do I find the answers to my questions?
Find your profile page. The URL for your profile page is www.funadvice.com/my/thedude. Substitute thedude for your specific username to see your profile. From there, you can find a link to every question you asked, every answer you posted, and every photo you uploaded.
Why won't my photo upload?
We only accept personal photos that are your copyright or those in the public domain. Adult, R rated photos, OR those that are deemed in poor taste at our discretion will be removed. Make sure the photo has a file name, eg, .png, .gif, or .jpg. The three file formats we accept are PNG, GIF, and JPG. If you don't enter a caption, then your photo won't upload.
What's with the name, FunAdvice?
Well, our goal is to be the fun place online to get real, human advice on just about anything. Since we launched in March, 2003 we've expanded, from four categories to more than twenty, and generated more than seventy thousand answers.
How do I ask a question?
Browse our question asking tutorial here to learn about how to ask a question, put it in the correct category, add pictures to your questions, and get the best possible answers the fastest.
Who answers my questions?
Other internet people just like you - friends, other members of the site, and fellow Fun Advice users. It's fun, it's easy, and it's completely free.
What qualifies as good advice?
Good advice is an answer to the question that, without any links, will help the person with their problem. Links are OK, however, you must answer the actual question. A link to a search engine is NOT an acceptable answer, as that's like telling users "use a search engine instead". The reason they use FunAdvice for their question is because some things are too difficult to find in a search engine, and they want real, honest, human assistance.
Who are the advisors, and how can I become one?
Great question! We just had another member ask this, and posted a thorough reply here how to become an advisor. If you're interested, please send editor a Fun Mail and she'll let you know if the questions you've answered qualify you to join the ranks of our esteemed advisors. To learn about the rules and responsibilities you'll be taking on, consult the advisor's guide.
What is the Fun Mail feature and what's it do?
Fun Mail is our local messaging system, completely anonymous and private. Lots of our members like to communicate with each other, but for a variety of reasons, would rather not give people their email address until they know each other better. Fun Mail provides a safe, convenient & easy to use way to communicate with the other members of the Funadvice community while maintaining your privacy, if you chose to. Learn more about how to use Fun Mail in this tutorial.
If you haven't registered yet, please take a moment to sign up. Keep in mind that you do need to be over the age of 13 to use this site.
How do I give better advice, and how do I get good advice?
Great question! Just check out our tips on giving and receiving great advice page to learn how to get the best advice possible.
Is it OK to add my promotional link here or promote my business?
No, commerical solicitation, promotion, link dropping, etc, are all forbidden activities. If we let one person do it, more people do it, and then pretty soon we're hip deep in self promotion & advertisements disguised as advice. Leave the promotional hat at the door, and if you really want people to visit your site, add your personal URL in your profile.
Can I delete a question I asked?
No, per our Terms of Use, the only questions that are removed are in violation of those terms. If you remove your account, the questions and answers remain archived on the site under the username fau OR funadvice. You can however mark a question anonymous on your my questions page.
Why can't I post my email address?
FunAdvice automatically changes email addresses into "Fun Mail me" links, to protect member privacy. If you want to exchange emails with a member, make sure you can trust them and do it privately via Fun Mail.
