How do you teach this kind of person a lesson?

They call in sick at work quite often, at least 3 times a month, and sick for just “that day”.

The next day they are fine. Whatever it was he feels better now.

THEN: Today for example, he shows up right on time, coughing, hacking, sneezing right there in the midst of everyone. Said he had a fever. I told him go home!!!! Get away from me!!

He’s like, “oh, I better be here cause I’ve burnt up too many of my sick days already, I’ll need some of them this summer”

I felt like knocking him out.

Go around coughing and hacking all over him all the time or say how wonderful it is working with somebody like that, saying it sarcastically of coarse

Well if you guys have sick days then he can use them whenever he wants. Stop worrying so much about his work ethic and focus on being an awesome employee. If it becomes a problem in the work place, it isn’t your job to address it, it’s your boss’ job.

It isn’t really your job to teach anyone a lesson. You are an adult responsible for your own behavior and they are an adult responsible for their own behavior. If they abuse your company’s sick leave and you don’t this only makes you look better. You do have the right to a healthful work environment so you don’t have to put up with him infecting you. If they seem ill ask them to keep their distance. You might consider wearing a medical face mask when your inconsiderate coworker is symptomatic.

Thanks, I know it isn’t my job, but I do feel an obligation to correct him. I’m a 20 year employee. He’s been there maybe 4 and he is a dishonest person, a gossiper and a liar…….but, also a manipulator so “certain” people like him (or, they don’t know what to do about him) He’s a sociopath.

We have a sick leave “bank” that most everyone contributes to, from our “given” sick days, in order to create a LARGER POOL of days, JUST IN CASE, someone gets “really” ill and needs them. He doesn’t contribute, but burns his own personal ones up as if they are “owed to him”.

Well, my point is that he uses sick as an excuse to be off work, then comes to work sick and spreads his germs around.

No, sick days are not to be used “however he wants.” Sick days are for when you are ill or injured. Hopefully you won’t use all your sick days. Using sick days like paid vacation days abuses the system. I agree that it isn’t onemandog’s job to enforce the policy though. There are employers who are moving from providing vacation, holiday, sick, civic, and personal days to giving employees a total number of days off to use however they wish. Under this system he would be free to use his days any way he pleases but most employers don’t use this system.

At one job I was out sick one and a half days over 5 and a half years. By the time I left I had almost 2 months of sick days accrued. In my case my choices were to leave them in case I ever worked for them again (not bloody likely) or donate them to the sick leave pool for people who have a major illness or injury. I donated them.
